Surgical Treatment of Unilateral Bony Ankylosis of T.M. Joint with Chronic Mandibular Osteomyelitis in a Child

Abstract
This is to report a case of unilateral bony ankylosis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with chronic osteomyelitis occurred extensively in. the right angle, ramus, and body of mandible.
A 10 years female patient was successfully treated by the hemimandibulectomy and nterposition arthroplasty with acrylic resin graft.
The results are as follows.
1. Bony ankylosis of T. M. Joint occurs rarely with chronic mandibular osteomyelitis. It is suggested that its origin was infection, and its type was unilateral and extra-articular ankylosis.
2. In this case, the age of patient ranged the category which was frequently arisen in child below 10 years. So, the duration of ankylosis at the time of examination was 3.5 years, and then facial deformity and limitation of mandibular movement was appeared.
3. Treatment of this diseases was essentially performed the hemimandibulectomy an)d interposition arthroplasty with acrylic resin graft for better improvement of facial profile and functional movement of mandible, _because this bony ankyiosis was accompanied with very large lesion of chronic oste -myelitis.
4. The postoperative profile has become better, and thus postoperative process showed no recurrence without any complications or sequela by this time. The interincisal length during maximum opening of mouth was 0.5cx in preoperative, but 3.4cx recently after operation.
